Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
Pheww... submitted the paper now but just realised that the conference is in Malaysia!!! The dateline is 30th April 2007, does the conference follow the time in Malaysia or international time, I mean GMT? If it is according to Malaysia time, that means I'm late in the proposal submission! That's 2.20am, 2 hours late. Any ho, if ALLAH wills, the conference will accept my proposal. If that is the case, then I can go back to Malaysia sponsored by my college or faculty.
Alhamdulillah, 2 schools replied me today and I have an appointment with one school this week and another the next week. If thing goes well, inshaALLAH I won't need to worry about collecting data in the school at the end of term, which means that I am more likely to go to the Rihla! Woohoo! Please make du'a for me.

Rihla
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
Don't know if you have heard about this deen-intensive programme called Rihla. It's a pretty cool programme because it is like going back to the time when the Prophet (saw) received the revelation from ALLAH, learn about the science of Qur'an, the hadith and all I need to know about Islam in a short period of 3-week time. The coolest thing is to be able to learn from some great shuyukh! Also, this trip will give me a 'mahram' visa since I failed to get Hajj visa last year due to the availability of mahram. The tuition fee is not very expensive and it includes the umrah package with 4* hotel, etc. I applied really last minute, it was like 2 days before the closing date. Alhamdulillah, I got the acceptance letter now.
But...
The trip will be from 6-26 July 2007, which means there is still 2 weeks before school holidays and 1 week in the summer holidays. Now the problem is, I still don't know about my schedule with schools as if the schools are still open, there is still a chance to collect data in the schools. I don't want to risk postponing the data collection to the next academic year which is like a 2-month gap. But on the other hand, it might be a good idea to give me a bit of time to analyse the data before I go on and collect more. However, the problem is I don't know the exact schedule yet and now I'm still waiting for the replies from the schools which I'm following.
In this summer holiday, I'm planning to teach the girls in the mosque tajwid and want them to start memorising Qur'an seriously from the beginning with the understanding of the Arabic meanings. Since they are doing their GCSE Islamic Studies at the moment and will finish the last paper on 18th June, I think I can only start the tajwid class after that. If I go to this trip, I'm really hoping that I can go back to Malaysia from Saudi. That will save a lot of money because the ticket from Saudi to Malaysia is quite cheap. So, it this is the case, what should I do with the girls?
Right, the next thing is to go home to Malaysia. Since I will pay quite a handsome amount of fee for this trip, to go back to Malaysia, I need to spend a few more hundreds. To get a cheap ticket or rather a free ticket to Malaysia, I can ask my college or faculty to support my trip to Malaysia for Conference. Yes, there is a conference in Malaysia called the 4th International Qualitative Research Convention 2007 at University Malaya. It will be on 3-5 September 2007 and the closing date of paper submission is TODAY! And I still don't have a great idea to write a good proposal and abstract to confirm a place! See, if I get on this conference, there is no point of me going back to Malaysia after the Rihla. It's better for me to go in September then.
So, the conclusion is, I like to go to this Rihla, but I don't know if I should after considering all these circumstances. My friend said, why not next year? Well, next year would be the last year of my PhD and by July 2008 (if they still doing the Rihla at this time), I'll be VERY busy writing up my thesis and rush the dateline for viva. Ok then, what about 2009? No, this programme only takes students from UK, US and Canada. In 2009, I'm no more a UK student cause inshaALLAH I will be graduated and back home in Malaysia.
So, what do you reckon?

Takbir!
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
Last Saturday, Imam ZiaUllah Khan came to Cambridge to give a talk on 'The Pursuit of Happiness' (reminds me of the film by Will Smith based on a true story) in the mosque. A German lady came to listen to the talk and became so interested in Islam. After the talk, the Imam and a group of brothers and sisters, including this lady who is a friend of one of the sisters, went to have dinner in Sweet 'n' Spicy, which is a bit of more barakah place to have dinner since they don't sell alcohol. At about 11pm, this lady took the shahadah simply because the Imam said, you know your feeling is right. Alhamdulillah, she took the shahadah and became a Muslim.
I didn't know about it until yesterday when I attended the ISOC's circle which is supposed to be on Jinns, but changed to Axiom and Logic when the speaker didn't turn up for some reasons. I met the lady again and she gave me salam and told me about her conversion. I think she recognised me. I'm so happy with this good news. I'm glad that ALLAH gave her the guidance to accept this faith and the best way of life. Now, the next obstacle is to educate her and help her to lead a Muslim life according to Quran and Sunnah. Converting a person is a tough job, but the post-conversion matter is much tougher because it is not a one-shot thing but for life and it takes a lot of effort, time, perseverance, patience and wisdom, because a few misleading teaching might turn that person away or pollute the clean heart of this 'new born baby'. I pray that ALLAH will give her the courage and consistency in facing the tests as a new convert, I pray that ALLAH will give me the strength to help her and I pray that by ALLAH's mercy, HE will give guidance to my family too. Amin. Takbir!

How many innocient lives do you want to claim before you decide to change? This song sings it all. May ALLAH protect us and have mercy on those who are killed in this tragedy.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rojiun...
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
Since the Virginia Tech Shooting on 16 April 2007, many bloggers were posting articles and news about this very unfortunate incident. I was thinking of not going to write anything about this case because it is a sad news which repeatedly happened again and again throughout the American history knowing that the Gun Law should be changed rather than to keep on mourning and grieving for the deaths after each tragedy. For nearly 2 decades, have YOU not learnt? As President Bush said, the school should be a sanctuary, I would really ask him to apply this to all over the world, PLEASE make the whole world a sanctuary for all human race, then who would bother to carry a gun to protect themselves? If the Gun Law is for self-protection, why none of the student or lecturer in the Norris Building retaliated with their own weapon, if they should carry one to protect themselves? The law just doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, the reason for me to blog on this issue is because of a Muslim hero who sacrificed himself to help the other but never get the publicity from the media. We have heard how a Jew Professor, a survival of Holocaust, bravely saved his students, but have you heard about the story of this Muslim brother in the same building? Below is an account of the survival who praised the heroic act of this brother:

"The student mentions that Waleed saved his life and wants to convey this to Waleed's family. Apparently, the murderer came into Norris 206 and shot Dr. Loganathan and a number of students injuring Waleed. Waleed was sitting in the front row where he always sat. Everyone jumped to the floor after hearing the gun shots including the person narrating the story. The murderer then left Norris 206 to go to another classroom. The student that narrates the story was not shot but pretended to be dead and lay on the ground beside Waleed who at that time was only injured. The murderer then re-entered the classroom and was checking for alive victims. He had approached the person narrating the story who mentions that his heart was pounding out of fear. Waleed at that instant made a movement to distract the murderer's attention and was shot for the second time. Wedding
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
Nop, not my wedding, but other people's weddings. Life has been such a fast moving one. After came back from London, I went straight to the mosque for the classes and then met Charlotte or Aisha to do her Quranic Arabic, then went to Fatima's room to visit her. We ended up watching The Memoir of Geisha, quite a nice film, a Japanese story acted by a bunch of Chinese. Anyway, then we went to ASDA, called Sophia to visit her. But she said she is going to the Picture Art House to watch The Day of Glory. I think I still got that sense of craziness after the visit to London, I decided to go although someone has just told me to come to the mosque for a little walimah of a couple I don't even know who they are. I think ALLAH is not happy about me going to the cinema that I sprained my ankle while climbing over the chairs in the cinema to prepare myself for Maghrib prayer...
So, I have to sleep over in Sophia's house cos the next day, I have to go to the mosque. After the mosque, I have to borrow Alia's cloth to go to a Bengoli walimah in University Arms Hotel. The bride is the daughter of one of the teachers in the mosque. She married to a Bengoli from London. It was a grand wedding party with about 700 guests and got into the newspaper. Big Limo from London brought the groom and families to Cambridge, you can have a look at the vehicle:

I was not really enjoying the party cos a lot of the girls and ladies whom I saw wearing hijab out there, suddenly they changed into another person by not wearing hijab and all dressed-up like a bollywood celebrities in a mixed environment! When it came to the time to eat, everyone just like has forgotten what is ADAB, too embarrass to describe it, though not all of them were doing the same thing.
Anyway, after a while, Aunty Zohra brought me to the Pakistan Day in another part of the city. That was much better cos was not as crowded as the wedding and we get to talk with people. Met a 2nd year foundation doctor and consulted her about my ankle. She said that I should keep on the bandage (which is my friend's piece of cloth for waxing, don't really know how to use it) and I should walk on that foot. Take paracetamol to bear the pain. Alhamdulillah, it works and I' m better now.

London Adventure (continue)
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
When I reached Maria's house in Redbridge, her mum has already prepared dinner for me. I love finish and I definitely love Bengoli dishes which are mainly based on fish. Delicious. For the first time, I get to taste tuna kebab, tuna samosa, home-made rice chappati and all those fish dishes, and the most important part is, they are not very spicy at all. Such a nice time staying over in Maria's house and especially she got 3 other sisters too who are very friendly.
On Friday, we went to pray jumaah in the East London Mosque, met some of her friends and also a sister I met in Clare College when she came for the Access Day in Clare College. Then have a brief tour around the mosque to see the teaching and learning facilities there. Trying to see if this will be possible to be applied in Cambridge. Really want to have a Islamic school in Cambridge but everything will come down to money. Was thinking if a shop or an organisation can sponsor a classroom, i.e.: a company sponsor for a science lab, another for IT lab, or more than one company for one classroom, maybe things will work. ALLAHU'alam.
Then we went to Stratford to meet Sumera and Asma Rahman (Oxford). We ended up talking for 2 hours about ISOC and Muslim youths in UK. Aspiring what we can do to help the Muslim youngters who have gone off-track. So much things to think of, to plan and to be done. I do hope that what we have been discussed will become real one day, inshaALLAH. May ALLAH give us strength to carry out what is good for the ummah. After that, we went to Green Street to buy a wedding present for the wedding party I'm going to this Sunday and by the time we got home, it's already too late for me to go back to Cambridge. So decided to stay a night and then go home early the next morning.
About Sari... Bengolis are really good with Halal Sari, which you can wear Sari beautifully yet you are still covering your awrah. So try on one, quite like it but not sure if I can manage not to step on it while I'm walking. Think it's the training... still lots to learn.
Anyway, it was a great experience going to London this time. Really enjoy the journey and meeting the people. So happy to be able to meet a few sisters which don't even have the chance to meet each other in London all this while. Alhamdulillah.

London Adventure
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
This is not like me, not at all and it's just way too hilarious. I'm in London! And the funny part is, it's like a few-minute decision. I'm not a person who like last minute planning, but this time, I just don't care.
Zahra asked me to come down to London. So I told her that I only will be available on Friday as I am helping in the mosque every morning this Easter Holiday except Friday, which should be like Sunday for the Muslims. So we have the class off for this day. Then, I said if she wants me to come on Thursday afternoon and stay a night with her. She said OK. So I decided to come down. But then, she said her family is expecting visitors and I have to find another place to stay. Alhamdulillah there are many sisters in London, so I called up Maria and now I'm writing this post from Maria's house in Redbridge. We will be going around East London today and pray jumaah in East London Mosque.
I don't know what to do exactly in London and on the way to London, I was in doubt whether the money I pay for the journey would be worthwhile or not. But alhamdulillah it is very worthwhile. I reached Kings Cross and met Zahra, catching up what has been happening around while we were on the way to Northwick Park to see DINA! I miss her like crazy. The first thing we did there is Asr Prayer. I nearly cried when I realised that she has been waiting for me to pray Asr in congregation when she actually can pray first. I pray that ALLAH will reward her for leading the prayer. Then we talk through the whole way back to Kings Cross where we separated. Then I came to Maria's house.
Have to go now to catch a train back to Cambridge for the class in the mosque. Will continue then.

Drilling my tooth
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
After waiting for 2 months, finally today I got my appointment with my dentist to fill my tooth (no. 6). It has been nearly 2 years that I didn't get my teeth checked. I don't know if it is because of the different technology use in UK compared to Malaysia or because of the advance of dental technology, this time, it's not as painful as before and it only took 20 minutes for the whole process of regular check and filling. The most scary part is the drilling, but alhamdulillah it's done in such a way that not much pain needs to be suffered. Plus, they put these little riddles on the ceiling so while the dentist is busy drilling your tooth, you can lie there and count how many triangles in one of the charts stuck on the ceiling.
I kind of scare to get my teeth done because of the drilling before the filling. It's one of the most painful things I've ever experienced and you might just can stop it by shutting up your mouth, but you know you CAN'T! That's like torturing yourself, but for the sake of your health. Can there be any gentle way of filling teeth?
Anyway, the good news is, I don't have to come back again after a year, yay! But for this treatment, I have to pay £43.60, that's like crazily lots. Compare to Malaysia, I might just need to pay RM10 (as a staff of UTM) which is equivalent to £1.50 or less!

I don't know if it is because of the different technology use in UK compared to Malaysia or because of the advance of dental technology, this time, it's not as painful as before and it only took 20 minutes for the whole process of regular check and filling. The most scary part is the drilling, but alhamdulillah it's done in such a way that not much pain needs to be suffered. Plus, they put these little riddles on the ceiling so while the dentist is busy drilling your tooth, you can lie there and count how many triangles in one of the charts stuck on the ceiling.
I kind of scare to get my teeth done because of the drilling before the filling. It's one of the most painful things I've ever experienced and you might just can stop it by shutting up your mouth, but you know you CAN'T! That's like torturing yourself, but for the sake of your health. Can there be any gentle way of filling teeth?
Anyway, the good news is, I don't have to come back again after a year, yay! But for this treatment, I have to pay £43.60, that's like crazily lots. Compare to Malaysia, I might just need to pay RM10 (as a staff of UTM) which is equivalent to £1.50 or less!
